Roles in Brightspace

Brightspace Content is Getting Upgraded

Beginning with the Fall 2027 semester, Brightspace courses will begin using the New Content Experience by default. Additionally, Instructors now have the ability to enable or disable the New Content Experience in their own courses ahead of the change in Fall 2027. For more information about this transition, see our New Content Experience Transition page.

In Brightspace, there are many different roles available with different levels of access. Below is a list of the most common roles in Brightspace along with descriptions of what access each has in a course.

Course Level Roles

Instructor and Course Builder Roles

These roles are for people who need to help build and manage course content in Brightspace.

  • Instructor
    • Main instructor of a course.
    • Can be an official Instructor of Record or unofficial co-instructor.
    • Official Instructors of Record assignments are managed by the University Registrar's Office, but Brightspace Support can add unofficial Instructors on a case by case basis.
  • Instructor (Non-SIS)
    • Similar to Instructor role, except this role also has the ability to enroll users in their course in select roles.
    • This role may only be used in Non-SIS courses and never in official/for-credit courses.
  • Designer
    • Similar to Instructor role, except this role does not appear on the Classlist that is visible to students and other users.
  • Subject Librarian
    • This role is for librarians who may provide background support for a particular course.
    • This role is used most often when the instructor wants the librarian to engage deeply in the class

Teaching Assistants Roles

All TA assignments for current and future courses are managed by the University Registrar's Office. To submit TA assignments, visit to find and submit the Instructor Assistant Request Form.

The Brightspace Support team cannot add TAs to current or future courses.

  • TA-Instructor
    • The TA-Instructor role has the ability to both create and edit course content as well as view and grade student submissions.
    • Matches URO role of Teaching Assistant or Course Coordinator.
  • TA-Editor
    • The TA-Editor role has the ability to create and edit course content but cannot access any FERPA-protected data (eg- grades or student submissions).
    • Matches URO role of Course Assistant.
  • TA-Grader
    • The TA-Grader role has the ability to see and grade student submissions but cannot edit or create course content or activities.
    • Matches URO role of Grader.

Student and Read Only Roles

These roles are designed with only the ability to view course material, and they cannot edit course contents or see any student grades or submissions.

  • Student
    • Student enrollments in official courses come via YES & cannot be added manually to those courses directly in Brightspace.
    • Can fully participate in activities in courses as learners.
    • Can be enrolled in Non-SIS courses manually by admins or users with the Instructor (Non-SIS) role.
  • Student Guest
    • Student guests are able to view & participate in a course but will not be able to see any material that is submitted by other students due to FERPA restrictions.
    • Student Guest enrollment is managed by the University Registrar's Office. To begin that process, students must  to the URO.
    • Brightspace Support cannot add Student Guests to current or future courses.
  • Guest (Non-student)
    • This role is primarily for faculty and administrators who want to visit others' Brightspace courses without seeing FERPA-sensitive information or having the ability to accidentally edit anything.
  • Pseudostudent
    • This role is designed to match the abilities of the Student role, except it also allows users with the Instructor or similar roles to impersonate users in this role in courses.
    • This is helpful when Instructors and course builders need to see and interact with Brightspace exactly as a Student would.
    • Pseudostudent accounts can be set up each semester by the Brightspace SupportÌý³Ù±ð²¹³¾.Ìý

Elevated Access Roles

Elevated Access roles in Brightspace allow users to access large groups of courses at the department and/or school level. Because this level of access provides access to large amounts of sensitive data, Elevated Access roles are tightly controlled. Anyone who wants to request Elevated Access should contact the Brightspace Support team at brightspace@vanderbilt.edu to see if Elevated Access is allowable, or if an alternative option is more appropriate.

  • Super Designer
    • Similar to the Designer course level role except this is used to provide access to an entire School or Department.
  • Nursing Admin
    • School level role allocated to select representatives from the School of Nursing.
    • Nursing Admins have the ability to create/edit course materials & see/edit student grades in all Nursing courses.
  • Reserves Librarian
    • This role is for librarians who need to build course reading lists & work with the Leganto course reading list integration.
  • Administrative Access
    • This role is for departmental and school administrators who may need to view all courses in their area but do not need edit access.
